Born as a fabric for ‘work clothes’, denim has taken over the largest space in every woman’s wardrobe. Find out how best to wear it.

Denim: an all-Italian discovery

We are used to associating denim with the name of a well-known German entrepreneur, who was the one to patent jeans as we all know them today. But to fully appreciate the origins of this widespread and indispensable garment, we must clear something up:

Do you know the difference between jeans and denim?

If you too are unsure what term to use when referring to those comfortable trousers in your wardrobe, don’t worry, we’ll help you out.

From Nîmes

Denim is the fabric and its name originated in the 15th century from the city of Nîmes in France. This city was a leader in the production of this hyper-resistant fabric that is perfect for making workwear thanks to its distinctive diagonal weave. The word denim comes from Nîmes, but how do we arrive at the famous blue jeans and what role did the typical blue colour play in making them so famous?

From Nîmes to Genoa

The name jeans, which identifies the specific cut of trousers made of denim fabric, derives from the old French name for the city of Genoa; when we speak of blue jeans we are in fact talking about the first blue trousers in Genoa. The city, already a leader in maritime trade due to the efficiency and prominence of its port, exported to Europe the blue jeans that won over the man who chose to patent them.

The Genoa blue of the jeans is an indigo blue, uneven and perfect in its shades.

From work to cinema

Durable fabric, comfortable and iconic cut. Not long after their discovery, jeans became the must-have garment we all know today. The iconic copper buttons, two back pockets and belt loops were gradually added to the first model used as a work garment. American soldiers helped make it famous in Europe after World War II, but it was with the advent of the first film stars of the 1950s that jeans became an indispensable fashion and pop culture item.

Jeans are a symbol of modernity and rebellion, of style and innovation.

Jeans today

Today, denim plays a leading role in the collections of the biggest fashion designers and is the most loved garment by men and women of all ages. A symbol of inclusivity and comfort, jeans today continue to surprise us with different shades and models designed to enhance every body shape.

Which jeans models are most popular among women and what can we wear them with?

The long denim skirt for a trendy and sophisticated mood

Perfect for hourglass body shapes, the denim pencil skirt has a high waist but fits perfectly around the hips because it’s designed to enhance the typical curves of the female body. The central slit makes it wearable and comfortable for any occasion. If you choose this model, go for high heels and a cardigan, loafers and a blazer or a shirt and combat boots for an elegant and sophisticated style.

Flared jeans for feminine and glamorous looks

The bootcut model is definitely the trend of the season. It enhances femininity through an elegant regular cut on the hips and pelvis and then ends with the iconic flared design. Embellished with minimal details such as buttons and stitching, they guarantee hyper-feminine and impressive outfits. Perfect paired with wool jumpers and jackets or turtlenecks and crewnecks.

Baggy jeans with a comfy-chic mood

These are synonymous with comfort thanks to their wide cut and high waist. They fit every body shape perfectly and go well with street-style garments such as sweatshirts and basic T-shirts. They also convey a style with a strong personality when paired with leather jackets and biker jackets.

Skinny jeans for an easy-chic style

It’s the model that most hugs and clings to the figure but, rest assured, it fits every body shape perfectly, enhancing the best features. If this is the cut you prefer, go for straight oversized jumpers or blazers that enhance the design. Remember to match the accessories for a decisively cool look.
